IV. The Evaluation of a “Body-Building” Program Utilizing a Bicycle Ergometer Test

چکیده
In an effort to improve the fitness of youths, extensive "body building," "conditioning," or "toughening" programs have been advised and developed. Unfortunately little has been done to evaluate the effectiveness of these programs. Our experience with the testing of athletes2' 4 strengthened our belief that in order significantly to increase fitness a body-building program would have to be strenuous and would have to have an ever-increasing pace. The very unfit might be benefited by mild exercise, but boys in fairly good condition have to be given hard work if one expects to improve their fitness to do hard work. It is advised, however, that such programs be under experienced and careful guidance, that the medical and nutritional needs of the trainees be supervised, and that, whenever possible, the work be varied from group to group according to each group's relative fitness. The present report describes an attempt to evaluate the effectiveness of a body-building program by comparing bicycle ergometer tests given at the beginning and at the end of that program. Method

Correlation between the results of three physical fitness tests (endurance, strength, speed) and the output measured during a bicycle ergometer test in a cohort of military servicemen
BACKGROUND Physical fitness tests are widely used to assess endurance, sprint ability, coordination and/or strength. The objective of the present study was to analyze the degree to which the results of the Bundeswehr Basis Fitness Test (BFT)--a physical fitness test comprising a sprint test (11 × 10-m shuttle test), a flexed-arm hang test and a 1000-m run--are consistent with the output measure...
متن کاملNovel exercise protocol suitable for use on a treadmill or a bicycle ergometer.
Many exercise protocols are in use in clinical cardiology, but no single test is applicable to the wide range of patients' exercise capacity. A new protocol was devised that starts at a low workload and increases by 15% of the previous workload every minute. This is the first protocol to be based on exponential rather than linear increments in workload. The new protocol (standardised exponentia...
متن کاملThe effect of steady-state bicycle exercise on the activity level of F -VIII in patients with mild and moderate haemophilia A
Hemophilia is an X chromosome-linked inherited bleeding disorder. Frequent intra- articular and intra-muscular haemorrhage in severe haemophiliacs can cause significant disability. In order to resolve a simple bleeding in a 20-kilogram child, some 500 IV of factor VIII is usually required. The cost of this replacement therapy is enormous, especially for less wealthy countries. Vigorous exercise...
متن کاملImpact of the exercise mode on exercise capacity: bicycle testing revisited.
STUDY OBJECTIVE To test the performance of a tool designed to estimate functional capacity in order to select a bicycle ramp protocol yielding a test duration from 8 to 12 min in healthy individuals, and to assess differences in exercise responses between bicycle and treadmill tests. PARTICIPANTS AND MEASURES Forty-one healthy and physically active volunteers (10 women; median age, 37 years; ...
متن کاملThe effect of 8 weeks of repetitive speed training in hypoxia and normoxia on erythropoietin and aerobic performance of athletes.
Introduction: Due to the changes that exercise brings to the body in hypoxic conditions, today hypoxic exercise is one of the most common types of exercise among most athletes, coaches and sports professionals to improve performance at sea level (1). In this regard, various types of hypoxia exercises, such as speed training in hypoxia, have recently been considered. Hypoxia exercises are usuall...
